I have recently bought my first tractor. It is a 1948 Massey-Harris Model 30 tractor. It runs great. The problem is that it is missing the parts to hook up to implements. I know the three point hitch came later, so how did implements attach? How did it Work? Where can I buy the drawbar and other parts needed so I can attach implements? I want to buy a brush hog for it. Is there certain things I need to look for so it will hook up onto my tractor? Thanks for any help.

I use my 30 all the time for mowing. I pull a bush hog with it and an old john deere sickle mower. The bush hog is pulled like a trailer, the sickle mower is attached to the part of the hitch directly underneath the pto shaft. I've never had a problem with it. Just use common sense, and buy an over running clutch.

The 30 is a nice tractor, but the rear mounting requirement makes that power take-off shaft on an implement a hazard. Remember that a turning shaft can chew you up without mercy if you even brush it.

Another worry has to do with hitting concealed rocks with a bush hog. My MF35's 3 pt hitch holds the rotary cutter down when it strikes an obstruction, but I still have looked back more than once to see the whole thing in the air after an encounter with a boulder. A towed implement in the same situation might have bounced up and crushed me into the seat.

Cheapest/safest solution? Use your 30 for belt work and towing things -- it's a good puller -- and pick up a 3 pt hitch tractor with live pto for bush hogging.

Assumming a 1948 model, you have no central hydraulics on your tractor, correct? If your
entire draw bar assembly is missing, perhaps there
is a reason. Better to check on the condition of the 5/8" bolt bosses, located in the lower rear sides of the tranny/final case. You need 3 good on each side, then 2 additional under the belly,
to secure the draw bar rail. Since you are only
buying bulk steel items, shipping can exceed the
parts price. If you are in "Maine"(?),ordering used iron far away would be foolish. Post back.
