Hi,
No, you do not have to remove the axle casing. Remove the axle shaft at the outer end very carefully. The differential engagement gear will remain in place. Likewise be very carefull when refitting. Are you aware that you will have to drill or chisel the locking collar to remove it and you will require heat to fit a new ring. In addition to this you will need a press or a puller with suitable tooling to remove the bearing. Don't try heating it as you will expand the shaft AND damage the bearing. If you are lucky, take hold od the wheel flange and bang the end of the shaft down squarely onto something very solid, an anvil maybe. Sometimes the bearing will move but it does take a lot of effort. When you reassemble fit whatever shims are there and if you can measure the amount of endfloat. Ensure that the other axle shaft is able to move fully in this case to the left. End float shoud be 2 to 4 thou. Not many people are able to measure that so it is essential that there is only just the slightest hint of 'knocking' present and with at least 3 equally spaced bolts tightened ABSOLUTELY no tightness.
Good luck
DavidP
