I am a retired school principal having fun on my newly acquired Mini-Farm (7 acres) near Batavia, Ohio. I have four equines (three miniatures-donkey, mule, gelding horse), a Haflinger Mare and two Llamas. I need help cleaning the barnyard and barn, obviously. The old Massey Ferguson I got with the farm has a Serial Number from the plate under the Steering Wheel of 54572. The Seller calls the Tractor a T020. I can't find that Model. I suspect it is a MF50 manufactured in 1957. Can anyone tell me if a Loader can be added to this tractor and would that be a good idea rather than selling the tractor and trying to find a reasonably priced newer one? The Seller thought the Tractor wouldn't have enough power for a loader. I don't know how much you have to have to clean up areas.. Thanks for any help. Bill

I have a MF50 with a front end loader. Great tractor but not with a front end loader unless it has power steering. Takes a great deal of strength to turn the beast with the bucket. Either loaded or unloaded. Otherwise love the tractor.

The reason you don"t see the "TO" tractors is you are looking in the Massey Ferguson areas. You have to look in the Harry Ferguson locations to find the "TO" tractors, which stands for Tractor Overseas, meaning made overseas from GB, or in other words, in Detroit. You can put a loader on the TO-20. I have one on a TO-30. It works pretty well, but lack of power steering means you have trouble maneuvering in tight places, etc., and for that reason you may not want to use the tractor for other things with the loader installed. Installing requires a chain hoist and couple of hours, after you have done it previously. If you get a loader for it, consider one with the front pump, operated by a "stinger" to your front pulley, rather than the type that operate off a line to your hydraulic lift. Wagner made some of these. You can usually find them for less than $500, but make sure the pump is good.

Thanks, Phil. I still wonder how I can know that my tractor is a Ferguson T0-20 when the serial number seems to fit the MF-35 and the name plates and decals all say Massey Ferguson. It is puzzling. I do appreciate your comments about the addition of a loader. I bet steering it with the loader on would be tiresome when using the bush hog. I will check around for a Wagner Loader and give this some thought. Thanks, again. Bill

William,

All MF 35s had serial numbers of not less than six digits.

Look at this site, go to Serial Numbers, and you will find what you need. Also, it was not unusual for dealers or owners of older Ferguson who wanted to make their tractors seem newer to repaint and/or rebadge them to appear to be Massey Fergusons.

You are saying the name plate on the dash says Massey Ferguson? Hmmmmm! Do you have a name plate on the engine? If you do, and if it is a TO-20, it should start with "Z120...." Also, the TO-20 does not have an external oil filter. The oil filter is inside the pan.

Hi Phil: You guys are really good and helpful. After looking a bit more carefully, I suppose my old eyes play tricks on me. The plate under the steering wheel says "Ferguson",,not Massey Ferguson and it lists a lot of Patents in the US and in Canada. The Serial Number on that plate is 54572. The front emblem plate says "Ferguson" and not Massey Ferguson. The side decal says Massey Ferguson and I think looking behind the weather and worn out paint, I think I see a lot of gray paint. The rather worn plate on the engine shows C154807 but it is hard to read. The only "TO-'s", I see are a number of different numbers embossed in the metal of the engine block and the transmission and other basic heavy parts. Those numbers are T0-7006, T0-4024, to mention a few. They also show HF above those numbers. I assume that stands for Harry Ferguson. I was just about to accept that this is a 1951 TO-20 until you mentioned the engine number should start with Z120 and you said the oil filter is in the pan. I am going to go to the barn and look again. I will say the more information you guys are giving me, the more I am beginning to appreciate this old tractor. I don't know if a loader will be possible for it especially without the power steering, but I still am thinking about that. I may decide to just have this tractor restored and painted and enjoy it. I do like old vehicles. I have a 1959 Silver Hawk Studebaker which is very nice. I will post more of what I find about identify marks on my Ferguson. Would anyone have access to a manual for this tractor and a picture of what these looked like in their prime? Also, has anyone added power steering to these old tractors. I know in the old Studebakers, this was done. I had a 1964 Wagonnaire with Power Steering added. Part of me wants to keep the tractor as original as possible, but I do need a working tractor, too. This one was converted to 12 Volt, by the way. Thanks and I apologize for being so wordy. Bill

Hi Willliam,

From the s/n your tractor could well be a TO 20 built in 1951. If this proves to be the case, post on the Ferguson board Re installing a loader on this model, lots of discussion in Archives on the subject.
Hope this helps,
JJ.

Hi Bill,

I suspect you should be researching Ferguson rather than MF, Massey didn't come into the picture until sometime in 1953 if i remember correctly.

Regards, JJ.

Thanks, JJ. I will try to check that. When I look on the web for MF serial numbers and Model numbers, I find MF 35 and MF 50 but I never see the TO-20.. I guess I will learn this coding sometime.. Thanks, again.. Bill
