We own a 390T on the farm, with a 838 MF Loader,First off, great tractor!! Best MF we have owned. Lately we have noticed that the loader is getting slow to lift. Also doesn't seem to lift as much, I know what you are thinking, NEW PUMP!!! Also, on the right hand side of the tractor, there is a lever to by-pass the 3 point to hitch to combine the 2 pump flows to increase loader speeds, this also no longer has any effect on loader speed! One more question is the hydraulic pumps located on the right side of the engine, mounted to the front cover? Thanks a million

There is a tandem pump driven off the engine timing case, on the RHS of the engine. One section does the steering, the other is for auxiliary flow ie spool valves. The arms are operated by a ferguson pump inside the transmission (fundamentally the same pump as fitted to MF's from the T20 onwards...). You need to test the system to see where the problem lies, although it is likely to be the auxilliary pump. Check that the MK3A valve is working. This is the valve on the lift cover on the top of the stack pipe, which combines the flow of the ferguson and auxilliary pumps, and puts the Ferguson pump into constant pumping. Make sure that the cables are all moving, connected etc. If the loader is slow and not achieving pressure then the pump is the first port of call, you may be able to get a speciallist to rebuild just the worn section otherwise replace the unit.

Pump on side of engine operates steering and loader hydraulics arms are operated by an internal pump check the hydraulic suction strainers first

You wil need to drop the oil to clean/replace these. If you follow the large dia pipe under the pump back to the rear axle just before it enters the center houseing theres a square plate held on with 4 bolts remove the plate and slide out the strainer. theres a second strainer above a triangular plate under the center houseing.
