Flush the transmission case?

On my MF 65 I've drained the tranny oil preparing to replace it. While the case is empty I'm doing some other maintenance tasks - cleaning the hyd. strainer, replacing leaking side gaskets, fixing loose PTO engage lever etc.

Now I've got both side covers off I can see some black sludge at the bottom of the main case, and I notice that the same black stuff on the strainer is pretty sticky and won't wash off easy with degreaser. It's not stuck on, but it's very gummy (like it warns in the manual).

Is it possible to flush that black sludge out of the bottom of the case? If so, what would I use? And what procedure should I use to do it? Straight kerosene seems to dissolve the sludge - would that do it? How could I get all the kero out once it's in?

Thanks
David

David:

I've cleaned the sumps in both of my MF-35s and several Fords. The best way that I have found to do this is a weed sprayer full of gasoline. It's a piece of cake with the lift cover off but it can be done with patience through the inspection covers. Needless to say you need to take proper fire prevention precautions.

There's a gut (Jeff OH) on the fFerguson forum that has developed a procedure to do this on the TO series. Go to that forum and look it up in the archives. Now is the time to do it while you have the tranny opened up.
