Overcharging battery?

LAst week I got a whiff of "battery smell" while using the 150 Massey. I noticed a little leakage around the caps. Upon further inspection, one end of the battery is swelling. That prompted a check of the voltage regulator. It's 35 years old. Bypass isn't bypassing. I've got a new NAPA reg to install tonight.

Now the questions. I've noticed the voltmeter reading high. That should take care of itself. What effect would 16.2 volts have on the readings on 12 volt gauges? The oil pressure gauge has read higher than normal for a while. The fuel guage has been all whacky. Is the higher voltage responsible for any of that?

There'll be a new battery right after the regulator. Old one is leaking worse all the time.

(Tractor is diesel. No effect on ignition)
