I've had this Massey Ferguson 35x (Reg 1963) since 1977 and has served me well working the croft. However up until last year it has been kept inside but last year I moved house and havent yet built my barn/garage resulting in the Massey 35 being outside and not being used.
My problem is after the tractor being stationary for a year when I started it ..pushed the H/L gear lever into high and then weren't able to push the gear stick into any gear position.
Next attempt was switched the tractor off moved the gear stick into position(no problem) pressed the clutch and kept it down , started the tractor, managed with a little shove to push the H/L gear stick into position, started to lift the clutch it moved but then unable to disegage out of gear , even the clutch or breaks were of no use. The only way I maneged to stop was to pull the strangler.
Im told that the clutch plate could be ceased due to it lying outside.
Without spliting the tractor is there an easy way to free it up assuming that this is the problem.
Once the barn/garage is built it will have a major overhaul. Im not a mechanic but have split it before very carefully to replace piston sleeves and grind crank shaft. It was a success and pressure on engine has remained high and constant over the last 25 years.
I would appreciate some expert help and preferably an easy way out.
Thanks

Expert advise, this ain't. But here is what comes from my friend who has a 35 that does this fairly often. Access the clutch through the bottom, spray the bejesus out of the plates with brake cleaner. The theory here is that a light layer of oil causing a suction that does not allow the clutch to disengage. The brake cleaner removes the surface tension allowing them to separate. Good Luck

Hi,
Good ideas from everyone. If you tow or try to load the plate to free it you run the risk of breaking the hub in the plate. We have freed many over the years by engaging first in high and with the throttle set at fast idle STAB the brake pedal. In most circumstances this has been enough to free it.
Alternatively you can either jam the clutch pedal down and try to prise the plate free with a small screwdriver or similar.
If you are really adventurous, get hold of 3 2 3/4 inch 1/4unc bolts and fit them into the clutch housing working through the inspection plate underneath. YES, it can be done!! This will pull the pressure plate off further than normal clutch operation. Remember to tighten the bolts evenly..... .and remove them all after.

If you can get it moving again by nudging it into gear with the little lever while the engine is running and clutch is down, try to get it going in as high a gear as you can with some soil engaging implement raised up on the back. Drop the implement keeping the clutch depressed and put the power to it; it may break loose.

Alterntively, you might try starting it in gear by tempoarily bypassing the safety and putting a load on it with the clutch pedal down.
Also, if it is not a 2-stage clutch a load on the PTO may break it loose, again with the clutch pedal fully depressed.

I am not sure if the clutch was releasing or not from this passage in your post- "Next attempt was switched the tractor off moved the gear stick into position(no problem) pressed the clutch and kept it down , started the tractor, managed with a little shove to push the H/L gear stick into position, started to lift the clutch it moved but then unable to disegage out of gear"

Here it sounds like the clutch worked when you started to move. But if this is not the case, and the clutch friction plate is stuck to the flywheel I can offer this information. I had this promlem once with a pickup truck. I was able to start the truck while it was in gear. Then headed to an open field and applied the brakes and the accelerator at the same time. After several attempts the clutch broke free of the flywheel. In my case the clutch had been replaced in the fall and the truck had sat in a shed all winter. I think the fresh grind on my flywheel may have contributed to my problem. If you try this method be sure you have plenty of room to steer out of trouble in case you can't stop forward motion quickly.

One other option might be trying to pry clutch apart if you have an access cover plate.
