Here's my dumb question for my MF 135 Diesel: What's the best (easiest)way to properly drain power steering fluid? Do I have to remove the pump? The steering fluid is pretty dark & dirty, and I don't want to break something in the process, like the lines, or turn this simple job into a total rebuild of the pump with tractor down time. Will changing the internal p.s. filter help much or not worth the hassle? The power steering does not work 100% and I thought a fluid change would be an easy first fix. I added fluid earlier and air bled system, but the fluid is still pretty dark and p.s. weak. Thanks

Disconnect the return line from the pump hold it in a 5 gal. bucket start the engine let it idle till the fluid stops coming out turn the wheels from stop to stop a couple of times that will get most of the old oil out of it. Then fill it with the engine running with the same oil you use in the transmission and bleed the air. To replace the filter in the pump it has to be removed from the engine to access the back screw holding on the reservoir.

Thanks Big Dean. I noticed earlier when I turned the steering wheel full left to full right that oil came out of the steering column - I assume I turned it too far and blew a pressure relief valve. Is that the oil from power steering or the gear oil in the steering gears? I hope I didn't cause more problems. But, oil does not regularly leak from the steering system. Take Care.
