I have a MF3165 Industrial tractor and the low gear is not working. High gear works just fine but the low gear just pops out of place when I let off the clutch. I am wondering what the problem may be and whether this problem can be fixed w/out splitting the case (I have a loader / backhoe mounted to the tractor and it would be a pain to split).

I am assuming you are talking about the little short shift lever for high and low. If that is your problem it has a ring pressed into the hub of the planetary for the two speed. That ring is knurled on the outside with splines inside that ring is for low gear. It will sometimes come out or most of the way out causing the problem you are having. below is a link to some pictures that show the planetary and also the ring that comes out. I have information how to repair that I can email it to you if you will email me an email address to send it to.

Big Dean you are awesome. That sounds exactly like my problem and after looking at some pictures that I took I see what you are talking about. My email address is [email protected]
