Well I'm sick of waiting for this workshop manual to arrive!. I need to make a start in checking out my brakes, and as it's now up on blocks with the wheels off I'm eager to make a start.
Can anyone set me in the right direction to start stripping the axle down, I'll be starting on the right hand side. A few steps of the procedure to get me started would be good, hopefully the manual will be here by the weekend so I can get a better picture.

I have some original Massey-Ferguson manuals for the 165 (also covers some other models). The parts manual is about 600 pages. The service manual is about 500 pages. Both are $60. each. + shipping. The Massey binder is $20.

My brakes are working, so I can't help you there.

Its realatively easy. Securly block up the center of the tractor and remove the wheel. Take the brake rods loose and remove the covers by removing the two nuts. Its best to remove the rods from the actuating plates which are held by pins at this time. Drain the hydraulic fluid then unbolt the ring of nuts holding the wheel housing bell. You will need to suspend or have a jack to hold the wieght of the housing when it comes off. I rigged up a support to hang it from the beams of my shed. Once you have the housing loosened the shaft, within the housing, should simply pull out as the housing is removed. A plate held by to slotted bolts needs to be remove then to assess the brake disks. The brake disk should then just slip off with actuating plates and the new ones can be installed. Make sure you replace the seals located in the middle of the plates that prevents the hydualic fluid from reaching the brakes Be aware they need to be positioned so the seals can drain to the holes provided at the bottom of the plate. Reverse the process to put the assemble back together.

I suggest you begin with the housing that does not contain the positrac assembly because it is simplier though the removal of the positrac is pretty much the same. Good luck!
