I am assuming that the MF 35 had the same system as the TO-20 and TO-30 Fergusons. I had three of those. You can take the top cover off of the transmission with no danger of screwing something up and no problem of replacing. But the starter that came with these did not have a solenoid. There was a heavy 6-volt push button (momentary contact) switch in the top of the clutch housing. A battery cable came down from the battery box to one terminal on this switch and another ran from the second terminal to the starter. The starter was the older type that did not depend on any action of a solenoid to engage / disengage the starter drive. This switch was removable from the top of the clutch housing by removing one or two bolts and lifting up. If this switch is no longer in place, then you won't be able to restore the safety function. There should be a plunger in the transmission that extends through into the clutch housing to push on this switch when you move the shift lever to the right and forward. With a newer solenoid-type starter in place, you are still going to need power to the solenoid to actuate it even if you run the battery cable through this safety starter switch. So it will always be sort of a bastardized combination unless you got an original starter. Again, this is assuming that the MF 35 is identical to the TO-30. We had a MF-50. I never worked on it so don't remember it as well, but I think it did have a solenoid starter actuated by a push button below the steering wheel. You turned a key for ignition and pushed the button to start. There was a safety switch connected to the hi-lo shift lever. That had to be in Neutral just like on my 1974 165. But you did not move the shift lever to actuate the starter. If anyone has more direct experience with a MF 35 instead of a TO-30 and says I am wrong, believe them!
