Try parking the tractor on the level, so you don't run over yourself and remove the large plug where you fill the transmission. Sometimes one of the rails gets out of position. Use a long screwdriver and move the rail which is not lined up so that all three notches where the gearshift lever goes are in line. It has been a while, but I think I moved one of the gears on the shaft to get the rail to line up. This should be neutral and then you should be able to shift gears again. It won't fix the wear, but I have only had to do this a couple of times in about fifteen years on my tractor.

Hello George -

Common problem; several posts below on the problem.

Caused by wear on the end of the lever, on the lever ball/socket, and on the shifter rail castings. On a fast shift, you pull up a bit on the shifter and it pops out.

There are several cures - the simplest for us is driving out the pin under the rubber boot (about the dia of a 4" spike), lifting the lever, moving it to the reverse position and dropping it into the correct hole, and replacing the pin.

Hardest part is getting the boot replaced properly.

Hope this helps.
