MF 255 trans problems???

My best friend has a MF255 with what I thought is clutch problems but might be internal trans issues. Tell me what you think. I assume all of these were diesels and have the "Hi-Lo" Multi-Power switch as his does. It will barely move with the range selector in Lo and the trans in any gear. Put range selector in Hi and it won"t go at all. Doesn"t matter which position the multi-power switch on dash is in. You can put it in 1st gear lo range and it will go forward but if you just barely touch either brake the tractor will stop completely but you never smell clutch stink while doing this like the clutch is slipping. Also, the trans will shift into any gear perfectly without grinding so I believe the clutch is fine. Seems like something inside the trans is allowing the slip. Does this MF255 have a clutch pack or something inside the trans that could be allowing this peculiar event or what? The motor is VERY stout and the clutch has never shown any signs of giving up but something is wrong somewhere. His lift still works good, brakes, steering, etc. Just won"t go. I mean no power at all. You could put it in lo-lo and hold it in one place by hand literally. No peculiar noises or anything like that. Help...

i think you have some kind of main clutch problem, mayby the centre of the disk has come loose from the outer "friction area".

When the multipower is in low range there is a solid connection throught the transmission to the wheels. When the multipower start to slip in the high range, it will automatically switch to low range.

Pelsi, you are saying the multi power is some sort of clutch packs when in high range? If so, maybe his tractor is stuck in high range even though the selector was in low range when I saw the tractor a few days ago with this problem and these clutch packs are worn and slipping. Is this possible?

It seems this would be the problem if the tractor would not move at all when put in gear but it will. It will creep ever so slowly in any gear in lo range. How could it do that if the center of the clutch plate was broken from the outer? And, I don't hear any kind of chatter as if the center is of the clutch is grabbing the outer part enough to cause it to move this little bit. I hear no foul noises at all.
