MF 35 Locked Engine - Need Advice

Recently bought an MF 35 at auction. It ran briefly after purchase but the engine quit shortly after. The engine appeared to lock up and further attempts to start failed. Removed the valve cover, head and oil pan to inspect. The top of two pistons have a black coating and I cannot turn the crankshaft. Does this indicate that the engine and pistons are damaged and will need service?

If so, I would like to attempt rebuilding it myself but have never rebuilt an engine before. Is this a difficult task or would I be better served letting an experienced tech do the work?

It is a gas engine and everything else appears to function properly (until the engine locked)

Any advice for a first time tractor engine rebuilder?

Don't know why you pulled the head off first thing. Did you try removing the starter? Try turning the flywheel with large screw driver? Problem may not even have anything to do with the engine. Need more info to help you.

Starter was the first thing I pulled. Sorry, should have mentioned that. Made sure battery was charged, even threw in a spare I keep around. Tested the starter as well. It was strong. Tried turning the fly wheel after removing the starter. No luck. Also made sure transmission was in neutral. That's when I figured something inside was locked. Did find some pieces of metal in the oil pan.

did you check the starter that could lock in to the fly wheel or something from the clutch might be locked in the bell houseing a lot of things to check first before pulling the engine apart. was there any thing in the oil pan? copper from the bearings? the black on the pistons is no big deal just carbon. i'd start at the clutch end and work from there.

If you have removed the heads, poor oil on the piston and in the cylinders and let it sit for a day or two. Try to free up your engine before taring in to it any further. Once you get it moving, inspect the cylinder walls. Maybe a connecting rod seized, but then it would have spun a bearing. I don,t know the symptoms prior for it to seeze, runninng hot, running out of oil? Low oil pressure? You have to identify where it seized before fixing anything.

I just rebuilt the same engine (if gas). This was my first time too. It"s not hard but get the CD from Big Dean and the video that is sold on this site.
