135 spewing coolant...

I have a 135 that started spewing coolant from around the radiator cap. The coolant isn't hot, nor does it seem as if the engine is running hot. When you cut it off, there's no steam as if running hot. No leakes anywhere as far as I can tell, either. I put a new radiator cap on it yesterday, and the spewing has stopped, but after switching the tractor off, you can hear a hissing noise that lasts for no more than 3-5 seconds, then it's over.

Anyone have any ideas what this is, and should I be concerned about it?

PB - I am wondering how you made out with your problem on your 135. I seem to have the same symptoms of what you had 11 months ago. From the replies, I am guessing a head gasket for mine since I do get large air bubbles. Please comment on how you solved your problem.

I had one a while back that was doing the same thing. If you let it stand and run idle for a few minutes, it would drip out of the overflow hose. Run it a high RPM and it would pour out of the hose. Pulled the head off and din't find anything noticably wrong. Cleaned the top of the block and found the top of one of the sleeves cracked half way around, replaced the sleeves and head gasket and fixed the problem.

If a new cap stopped it you seem to be fine. It is possible to have the radiator appear over pressured without the tractor being overheated if you have a head gasket leak or cracked head that lets gases from the cylinder into the water jacket when that particular cylinder fires. You don't necessarily get water in the crank case like you do with many head or block leaks. When the tractor is cold, take off the radiator cap and start it up. Let it run at 1000 rpm for a few minutes and observe the water in the radiator. You should see it swirl from the water pump circulating. But if you have big gas bubbles or a lot of little ones breaking the surface then you may have trouble

If you just topped off the coolant then it's just getting back to it's proper level. It needs to be a couple (maybe 2) inches from the neck because once it heats up it expands and takes up the extra space in the radiator. One thing I would check, is take off the radiator cap and satrt it up. If you see a lot of bubbles you've got a bad head gasket.

I'm going to say that the pressure cap is just letting pressure off from the latent heat buildup or from the coolant hiccuping when the pump stops.....being it was flowing and it had energy in it.
