Massey 30, 1951. Air filter seems to work with
oil. How does this work. Tried to post this AM,
lost. Thank you.

I assume that by Massey 30 you mean a TO-30 Ferguson. In any case, the oil bath air cleaners all worked on the same principle. Air entered at the top, sucked in by air pressure in the intake manifold that was a lot lower pressure than the atmospheric pressure outside. So the air rushed down the central pipe in the air cleaner. It moves fast and so does the dirt in it. At the bottom of the central pipe, the air suddenly had to reduce direction to go up the concentric outer pipe. The air is not dense and it makes the turn. The dirt is much denser and has more monentum. It flies into the oil cup at the bottom which traps it and keeps it from getting sucked up again. On the two TO-20s and and TO-30 that we had, it was not jsut a matter of taking the oil bowl off the bottom and dumping it. There could be as much as 3/8" to 1/2" of hard sediment in the botton that you would have to scrape out with a popsicle stick or screw driver. This was when you were doing work that raised a lot of dust like harrowing. There also was a sort of mesh -very coarse loosely woven steel wool in the outer pipe of the cleaner. It was good tow ash that out in kerosene too as it would catch lots of dirt particles that did not get trapped in the oil cup. The new paper filters that came in in the 1960s were much superiod in terms of trapping dirt, as long as they did not get an unnoticed tear in them

All you need to do is dispose of the old oil, wipe it clean and replace up to the full mark which is molded into the steel canister with a medium grade(10w30) engine oil and put it back on.Easy as that.Oh yeah,if you were just wondering "how it works",the sediment in the air gets trapped in the oil and it works just fine.
