I have a couple of questions on my 65 diesel power steering.

* The drag link sits completely loose on the PS Pedestal with .25 to .3 inches of play. I assume there is a bushing that should be there. Does anyone with a part's number know what I should look for.

* When I am evaluating the PS on this tractor, what should I look for that would tell me I need to rebuild/replace the power steering cylinder or valve. I am new to working on Power Steering units and could use guidance.

Randy

Hi Randy Those steering system has to have enough slack to completely open the selector valve on top of the cylinder before the wheels start to move with the engine shut off. There are two small pin. the ones at each end of the centering turnbuckle if those pins have any wear in them they will cause the power steering not to work as it should. I have a picture that shows this if you will send me an email address I will email them to you.

Thanks Big Dean, I have your CD and the picture that shows the pins already. When I filled the system with fluid (it was very low) and ran the Tractor, it steers very easily to the right, but almost impossible to turn back to the left. It's also pushing fluid steadily out the cylinder.

My assumption is that I need to pull and rebuild both the valve and cylinder. Would the center adjustment effect the one way operation of the PS. Randy

Yes, the center adjustment, or the turnbuckle is the key to this.
If it is adjusted sligthly out of center the steering works excactly as you describe. Then adjust it the other way and it will change and when you have adjusted it too far it is light the other way and heave the way it was light first.
Actually, it can be a hassle to adjust this, a lot of trial and failing. Be patient and it will be fine.
Another thing is that you need to rebuild the cylinder so it stops leaking.

I don't know if the leaking cylinder will affect operation of steering but I'd fix the leaks anyway. The one way steering you describe sure sounds like the centering turnbuckle pins as Big Dean suggests. If there is any wear to the pins or the holes you will get one way steering. Be sure to check the pins and check the holes in the ends of the turnbuckle for wear.

Will my Massey dealer still carry these pins and seals for the turnbuckle and cylinder? I can find seal kits for the 35's online, but not the 65's. Randy
