My dad asked me why my 165 did not have stabilizing bars like on his Ford. I didn't have an answer, does anyone?

My 165 has stabilizers but they're not OEM. When we bought it used 20 years ago it had a ROPS frame bolted on at the fender mounts & non-oem stabilizer brackets.

The stabilizer pins don't line up w/ the lower link pins, so the bars are as crooked as a bois d'arc post. They still work though.

Further to what has already been stated. you must have 2 stablizers and brackets to perform properly. The adjustment must be taken up so that there is no play. If both these rules are not followed and a significant force in placed on these parts the cast brackets wil break or the slide tubes will collapse(box scraper forward/reverse!). If you decide to try and locate parts. I just went thru this ordeal for a MF40 and an Orchard 135. You will have to specify which axle you have(round or square). If you want all original MF parts be prepared to PAY!!!Parts are not in the 165 parts catalogue they are available from the Accessory Parts catalogue.
Good luck
Gary

Re: Stabilizing bars - they were extra cost option in reply to RSpurling, 03-04-2006 22:03:34

My understanding was that the stabilizing bars were an extra cost optional equipment and that some people bought then and others did not. We had two TO-20s and a TO-30. The 30 and one of the 20s had the factory brackets under the axles secured by the fender bolts. But we only had one set of the stabilizer bars. We bought a 180 new and had to buy a bracket and stabilizer bar afterwards. This bar adjusted with an acme screw like a top link. But we soon busted the brakcet which was cast iron, We had it brazed and it broke gain a year later. So the local maching shop fabricated one from steel plate, 1; thick welded together. The trick when making a gracket like this is to get the hole for the stud where the bar will attach perfectly aloigned with the centerline of the front end of the lower links. That way it is all rotating around a common center and nothing gets thghtened or loosened.

I an buy brand new stabiliser bars and brackets at the Mills Fleet Farm stores here in Minnesota. I think that Tractor Supply Corp stores has them as do other-brand fleet-farm stores.

The price is pretty reasonable as are replacement top links and other 3-point components at these stores.
