MF-35 Hydraulic Pump Rebuild

Still working on the hydraulic system of my 1961 MF-35D. Have honed the cylinder, re-ringed the piston, replaced the pressure relief valve, cleaned the sump, filled with proper GL-1 90W, and gone through all of the lift cover adjustments (several times).

Still not satisfied with performance so removed lift cover again and removed the pump. Upon disassembly I discovered that all pistons/chambers were scored, 2 rather badly, and one piston had no ring on it at all.

Have ordered parts for pump and will reassemble it when the parts arrive.

Though the pump seems simple enough, I would appreciate any and all advice regarding overhaul as I have not worked on one of these before.

One last thing: After removing the pump, I found a caged needle roller bearing in the sump where the pump mounted. It appears that this bearing is for the pump drive output shaft and that it fell off when I removed the pump. Does this bearing simply slip over the pump drive shaft prior to installation of the pump?

Thanks, in advance.

Change the control valve at the same time, and be extra careful not to mix up any new and old parts as they are honed finish and will stick if mis matched. I agree that you should at least buy a parts book if not a workshop manual. It's probably a bit late now but I always mark the pump on dissassembly to get everything back in facing the right way.

Thanks, Thomas. The pump parts are organized and marked such that reassembly can be acomplished in identical orientation. Of course the pistons, rings, and chambers are being replaced.

The control valve seems to be functioning properly. Do you think I should replace it anyway?

Thanks, in advance.

Dean, you would be money and time ahead to stop work now, and buy a real MF Repair Manual, and a MF Parts Manual. The detailed exploded views in the parts manual and the instructions in the repair manual have saved my bacon several times on my MF690. Tom

Thanks for the advice, Tom. I have the IT manual for this tractor and access to MF materials if needed. As I will probably sell this one after it is right I do not want to invest much in additional manuals for it. Just trying to learn anything unique to this pump from the experts prior to putting it back together.
