Need some help. I have a mid to late 1960's 165 with a weak main hydraulic pump in it (only puts out about 1,500 psi). Tractor has a multipower Hi-Low on the transmission. I have been told to remove the main pump, that the tractor has to be split. Is this correct or can I just remove the three point top cover and take the main pump out? I appreciate any and all help. Also would appreciate any insight on what to look out for in rebuilding the pump.

For this job, recommend you get real MF Repair Manual and MF Parts Manual. The detailed instructions in the repair manual will help you out, and the detailed exploded veiws in the parts manual will save you at re-assemble time. Don't waste money on off brand manuals. Good luck. Tom

Before you pull the pump I have to ask, can you hear the safety valve blowing at 1500psi?

Jeff

Tractors that have the old style piggy back Multipower or the factory auxiliary hydraulic pump mounted above the three point pump the three point pump can sometimes be remove by removing the piggy back pump from the mounting bracket but a lot of them the bracket is to wide to fit through the opening in the top. Then it is best to split them between the transmission and rear center housing to remove the pumps out through the front. The tractors that have the late style piggy back multipower or factory auxiliary pump with the gear train mounting bracket. The tractor has to be split between the transmission and the rear center housing to remove the pumps on those. If you need a picture to tell which you have email me Big Dean

I have a MF 50 with the same problem right now. I have the top off but the pump will not come out the top( not enough room with the multi-power pump an mounting bracket on the hydraulic pump) Big Dean said I will probably have to split it to get it out. He could tell you if the 165 is the same as the MF 50.

It is not necessary to split the tractor on a 65 nonMP. The pump simply lifts out of the belly through the lift cover. The driveshaft has to be collapsed, the PTO coupler disconnected, and the PTO shaft pulled out the back of the tractor. I am sure a good repair manual would detail this (just stay away from the IT manual, as they omit a lot of info). Afternoon job, tops. Aaron
