I am considering buying an older diesel tractor. I have been told that the Massey diesel (3 cylinder) is a better engine than the diesels on the 801 or 4000 series Ford tractors. Is this true? Why? An Open Call for Opinions! Teach me.

As I understand it the Perkins 3,152 is still in production though only for export to countries not applying latest european emission standards. For Europe etc. the engine has been revamped and called the 1000 series. The Ford 3cyl is based on the 3,152 as the 3,152 and indirect injection pedecessor the 3,144 (`P3`- or more correctly F3 (Ford spec))was fitted to the Dexta. Ford were impressed by the sturdiness of the perkins 3 cyl so decided to develop their own.

Perkins aftermarket are MORE available than most others. You can get almost everything including cranks, heads etc. This engine was used on lots of machinery.

I don't know which, if any are "better". I do know that the Perkins engines run well, are very fuel efficient, the later, direct injection engines don't need (or have) glow plugs, also, there is a plethora of aftermarket parts available. You can buy virtually everything, up to and including heads and cranks.

I have two MF a 165 and 180, it is almost impossible to run a tank of fuel through the machine. it just doesnt use much fuel. Also i have found the MF dealer the best place to get parts usually as cheap as some of the catalogs I get. Also they usually have a mechanic who knows your tractor model. Also the MF dealer if you use a credit card can order the part and have it shipped directly to you. I order a part Thursday and had it Friday ups...

Glad to hear they still do that. Some years back I needed some con rod bolt lock tabs for my MH50 and like you say, they had it direct shipped to me. Considering the dealer was 50 miles away, that was really convenient.

Thanks for the information. Do you know if the Perkins parts are as available as vintage Ford tractor parts (ie 8N, 801 or 4000 series)? Is there an internet site for parts ? How about the Massey dealers?

If I'm not mistaken, MF is still using a variation of the 3a-152, in the 240's & 231's. If this is true, then you can expect parts to be available for quite some time. I've got a 1960 MF35 with a Perkins, and I love it.
