a friend just got a 1994 240 massey with power steering. i can turn the steering wheel either direction and the tires don't turn and the steering never locks out. i cracked open the fittings at the steering pistons one at a time and turned the steering each time, and it put out very little fluid and would never stop bubbling air. one more clue- it took 5 gals. of hydraulic oil to get it back to the correct level. am i about to pull the steering sector? i welcome any comments or advice. thanks.

When you say it took 5 galls to fill the reservoir, I'm assuming that that has to be the back end. The steering pump is mounted on the engine (timing case) and has it's own integral reservoir. If the seal has worn at the front, oil leaks in to the engine sump until empty, hence no steering.

Hey Scott Before you start tearing into fill the power steering pump reservoir with the engine running with MF Permatran 3 or one of the universal Trans/Hyd oil that meets the same specs. With the plug out turn the wheels from stop to stop while keeping the reservoir full a few times. It sounds like you might have air in the system.
