I have an old Massey Harris/Massey Ferguson model 72 self propelled combine that I rescued from going to China and I would like to know what the engine is. It is a flat head, six cylinder that looks like a Chrysler. I can't get in under it to get numbers off of the engine but the sn. plate on the combine says engine 30-1018-1. Can any one tell me the cubic inches of this engine and the horse power rating and if it is truly a Chrysler? Also the Decal on the combine say Massey Harris but the sn plate says Massey Ferguson so I figure it was built around the change over time of the 50's. Thank you! Roger

1206, I got the numbers but I did wait until it warmed up this morning to a balmy 11 degrees above 0.

Machine Model Number: 72SP-940-052Z1
Machine Serial Number: 94002400
Motor Type: 30-1018-1
Motor Serial Number: 228240

This unit has a 10 foot head.
Also do you have any idea as to what RPM this motor operated at? Thanks again for the help! Roger

Roger, Sorry I'm so slow getting back to you.I'm usually over at the combine forum on here.

Your 72 MH serial #94002400 is a 1960 model.They started at #94001378 in 1960.

Factory rpms arent shown in my sales lit but I would asume its 2000 or so.

It reached 80 degrees here today in SW MO,will be 81 tomorrow.We are in a severe drought.

Roger,the very first 72 Massey combines came out in 1959 and started at #94100001.

1959=94100001
1960=94001378
1961=94002572
1962=94002854
1963=94003154
1964=94003444
1965=94003735

Looks like they built around 4000 of them.

I have almost finished restoring a #72 pull type combine. [needs decals and a couple of belts]It is the same as you describe yours . `We purchased a # 60 SP new in 1958, it had the same Chrysler engine as yours but it was all Massey Harris. It was a very good little combine. Interesting. Harold

Back when I was a kid my Dad had a 1959 model 72 Massey SP combine with a 12 ft header.

It and all 72's had the flathead Chrysler Industrial 230 cubic inch 6 cyl engine that was rated at 57 hp.They were a sweet sounding engine.

Yours is probably an early 72 decaled as a Massey Harris but the serial # plate will say Massey Ferguson on it.Post the serial number and I will tell you the age of your 72.

There used to be alot of 72's around here but most are long gone.I do know of one 20 miles from me thats sat out forever.

Thanks for saving this one.
