MF 235 - Power Steering Problems ?

A local dealer has a 1976 year model MF 235 diesel for sale. Advertized asking price is $5000. I have seen it and it is relatively good shape. Hour meter shows less than 1,200 hrs., and relatively sure that it is accurate. Tractor has PS, and this is where my question originates.

Has a swept back front axle, and the radius rods have both been bent and repaired. Extra steel has been welded on them to reinforce them and it looks like the reapir was done properly without affecting the operation of the steering.

I know that MF 235's had serious problems with the PS. This tractor appears to have a new (at least not original) PS pump on it. The PS seems to work fine with no leaks, etc. Seems to work properly.

Now my questions for the experts:

What exactly were the problems with the PS on these tractors?

Did MF ever come up with a fix?

Can you still get PS parts for the tractors?

If the PS goes out completely, how hard are these tractors to steer without a functioning PS system?

Thanks in advance for your information.

I'm sure there are better qualified experts on this board than me, but here is my experience with the 235. The PS problems are not with the pump. The problems are with the massive steering gear box, which contains the PS control valve, power assist piston and cylinder as well as the steering shaft, rack and pitman shafts. Internal fluid leaks develope and will blow out the shaft seal and/or pitman shaft seals. I am not aware of any MF fix. PS pumps are readily available in the $300-350 range. Some dealers MAY have the gear box rebuild supplies. I was quoted a rebuild price of $700-$1000,about 5 years ago. I have seen some of these models with the steering box replaced with one from a Ford tractor. Didn't look too good, but was functional. It is nearly impossible to steer these tractors without the power steering working. These tractors are 30 years old and seals and gaskets will deteriorate just the same, even tho the tractor has low hours. Water running down the steering shaft, past a leaking shaft seal and into the unit will also raise havoc!! This has been my experience, your mileage may vary!!!
