The generator on my MF65 stopped charging also. Corrosion on the brush holders prevented the brushes from making good contact with the commutator. Regards, EEA

Hello Ed -

They can be converted, but the cheap (read cost-effective) self-energising Delco's stick out like a sore thumb. Our 65 is the only one we have
not converted, for that reason.

Oil seepage is normal - that's why they installed the hole! Can be engine or transmission oil (if you don't smoke, you can smell the difference) and is not normally serious. When it gets bad (a quart a day), you will have to split and replace the seals - cheap and relatively easy unless you have multipower.

The generator is reliable. If you have a voltmeter, check running to see if you have full 12 v on the heavy terminal, and probably a lesser voltage on the field. If so the reg is probably doing it's job, if not, there may be a problem there or in the wiring. Could also be the replacement generator.

My operator's manual shows a 2 brush generator on the gas and a three brush model on the diesel. Both seem to increase output by decreasing voltage (grounding) the field terminal. The regulators are different, and heaven knows which combination may be on your tractor after all these years!

Dean Austen (Big Dean) might be able to shed some light on this area.

Hope this helps.

You may have to magnetize the field shoes in the new generator, this used to be calld "polarizing". You do this by first disconnecting the field wire from the generator, then taking a jumper wire from the positive battery terminal and momentarily touching it to the field terminal on the generator. Reconnect the field wire and see if it charges. If not, suspect the wiring and the regulator. Regulators develop oxide on the internal contacts and this will prevent proper operation every time! Also check to see if there is a fuse hidden away somewhere. Remove all connections one at a time, and clean the surfaces with emery to bright metal. Tractors sit out, and the moisture causes corrosion.
