There is a MF 1080 deisel tractor at a near by auction. My nephew likes MF and is interested in it. I have not heard it run, it is advertised as having 3680 hours on it. It has 38" tires. What is your opinion of this model MF? What has been it's track record?

It also has multi-power on it. I don't know yet if it works or not. A dealer warned me about the multi-power. Opinions of multi-power on this board seem to vary....generally positive.

Appearance wise the tractor looks good. Sheet metal is straight.

Thanks ahead of time for your comments.

MF 1080 went for $6700.....more than my nephew wanted to pay. Multipower worked good as Merle said it should.

Thanks. Paul

Paul

I'm currently rebuilding our 1080 that has been in our family for 30+ years and will give you my impressions. Good points. 1. Starts easy and uses very little fuel even when worked hard. 2. It is a platform type tractor (operator sits on top of the transmition verse riding it like a saddle [285])this gives the operator the feel of a large frame tractor. 3. Ours has been reliable and served us well after years of neglect. Bad points. 1. Final drives are a little light and the tractor doesn't hold up to heavy 3pt loads. 2. They are not a very common tractor and parts are hard to find sometimes (had to build my own exhaust manifold). Ater looking for a good used one for four months I gave up and built one only to be offered a used one a week later for $580 US, NOT. 3. Aux hydraulic doesn't have float option (no big deal unless you have been spoiled with a 11XX series massey tractor. Things to look at. 1. Exhaust manifold, is it broke or cracked? 2. Does the 3pt raise and lower as it should, plus watch it as it is in the half way up position to see if it "jumps" a (little 1/8" OK, 1/4" or more it needs to be looked at) mine is split right now having a rebuilt pump installed for a no raise condition. 3. Final drives, if they are leaking oil they have been abused and will need to be rebuilt. 4. Multi power. Try to drive it in any gear in high transmition range about half throttle. Then shift the multi power from low to high. If it shifts hard and fast it is good. If it shifts slow and slushy it needs to be looked at.

Good luck
Merle

Hi Paul,it sounds like the 1080's were good tractors, but we had a 1085 with a 4cyl 318 perkins in it and weren't pleased with it at all. Many problems with rings and head gaskets. There were some others around here that were excellent tractors,as the others weren't worked nearly as hard as ours was.Guess it depends what you need it for,semi-light work, perfect, good on fuel and all the works, hard work ie. chopping silage for long days, maybe you need more cyls and hp.phill.

1080 is a good tractor. Don't be afraid of multipower, it's a good hi-lo powershift. Just get an owners manual and learn how to use it properly and you'll do fine. 1080's are just as good as any other 80hp tractor out there.

Hi,

Do you always refer to PTO horsepower in America when you talk about tractors ?

PTO hp is the gold standard for comparing trators in America. Comes from the days of tractors that had belt pulleys and belt hp was measured. Belt evolved to PTO. The Nebraska University tests further reinforced the PTO hp concept, as PTO hp is one of the primary tests they perform. All tractors up until recently had to go through the Nebraska tests to be sold in Nebraska. I know alot of European tractor companies use engine hp as a standard of measurement. Americans see that as deceiving as you lose hp by the time you reach the pto. Most implements even tillage implements sold in America have a minimum PTO hp rating for safe operation and efficient operation.

Ok, then I understand why the brochure I have for the tractor says 90 hp...

Neighbors down the road had one and was happy with it. He was the type of person that didn't figure a tractor was broke in until you had 5 or 6 thousnad hours on it. He used to run hay and that 1080 would put more through the bailer than you cared to stack.
