I recently bought a 1971 MF 40 Industrial with a a manual shuttle transmission. The lever that engages the differential lock was missing. I purchased a used one and attached it only to discover that the differential lock is frozen (in the unlocked position) and is probably why the lever was not included. Any ideas on how to correct the problem?

My MF35 had a similar problem when I bought it. Unfortunately, the fix wasn't easy.

There are 2 gears that mesh together when the differential lock is engaged. In my case, someone had engaged the thing while one wheel was spinning at a high rate of speed and all the teeth had broken off.

Some of the teeth from this gear had found their way into one of the wheel bearings, and were slowly grinding it up.

The tractor had to be split to fix the problem. The gears were over $600 new. But the dealer was able to locate some used ones for a couple hundred.

I hope that's not the problem with yours, but it might well be. Maybe Big Dean will respond and have more info.

Boss Hog: Thanks for the reply. Big Dean did reply (I sent him a separate e-mail) and he thought the problem might be that the shaft that slides into the differential has become corroded due to the non-use and is frozen. He said it might be freed up with some penetrating oil but usually the trumpet housing has to be removed to gain access. I hope this is the problem and not stripped gears, but I guess there is only one way to find out.

thats what was wrong with mine the shaft had frozen in housing from none use, luckyly i was replacing brakes anyway, i used a slide hammer with a clevis yoke attached, ran a bolt thru clevis hole and spring pin hole of shaft, worked it back and forth with pen oil and it finally freed up works good now.
