I have a MF 285 with multispeed transmission. While using it yesterday I shifted from forward to reverse and now the tractor will not move itself in any gear. I can feel the gears spinning when I depress the clutch and shift. The tractor is not "locked". I moved it with another tractor.
Any idea where to start the search?
All hydraulic pumps are working as loader and 3 pt works fine. plenty of fluid in transmission.

right, no noise at failure, no pops, no anything

That planetary is engaged by the range shift lever, correct?

can i see it by removing the lift cover on top?

Remove the transmission fill plug put the tractor in gear let the clutch out look in the hole at the gears. If the gears are turning it is probably the coupler for the shaft that runs from the transmission to the differential pinion shaft has either broke or the cotter pin that holds it in place has broke or came out & let the coupler slide forward off the pinion shaft. If the gears are not turning it is your clutch disc has came apart. if it is the clutch disc you will probably have to split the tractor and replace it or if you have no clutch pedal free travel you might get luck and be able to adjust it. If I can be of further help email me.

I know on a 1085(similar to 285), there is a range planetary between transmssion and differential that can produce the symptoms your talking about. Being they had a stardard duty and a heavy duty model, I would say that they would be prone to failure. I've never worked on one. According to my 1085 service manual they look like they can be tricky to repair. You also could just have a shift rail problem. One way to check this is to try changing gears with the tractor off and blocked so it can't roll. take note of which gear changes offer you the least resistance. Roll the tractor ahead and repeat to see if any thing changes. A service manual will really help you. You didn't mention any noises before the failure so I'll take it that no gears stripped.
