The gauge has 2 posts on my 165. What should be running to/from these posts?

The purpose of the ammeter is to tell you what is going into/coming out of your battery to help you to monitor it's condition; i.e. state of charge.

Hence everything electrical in/on your tractor goes thru it except the high current starting wire from the battery, thru the solenoid, to the starter.

The battery goes to one side (+) for a neg ground system, everything else to the other (-), including the gen/alt output.

The gen/alt will push the needle to the + side indicating that the battery is charging, while the loads will pull it to the - side indicating that it is discharging.

Game plan is for it to be centered or slightly in the + region (after gen replenishes starting power) while you run the tractor.

If it stays in the - region while operating; like at night when you are running lights, you will eventually discharge your battery to the point where it won't be able to start your tractor.

HTH,

Mark
