I have the opportunity to purchase a 1966 model MF 165 Diesel.

Tractor currently has inoperable PS, but I suspect it either needs a seal in the PS pump, or it needs a new pump. Any suggestions on what might be causing PS problems, assuming I can find that the PS pump is OK?

Also, the dealer says that he was told that the engine has a slight knocking sound, however I cannot hear the knocking myself. Any idea what might cause a knocking sound. Tach shows about 3400 hrs. and I believe it is correct (I have no way of knowing for sure). Overall, the tractor looks to be on very good shape?

Could a faulty PS pump be causing a sound that could be perceived as knocking?

If the reporte knocing sound is indeed an engine problem, what is the cost for a rebuild of this Perkins 4 cyl. diesel? I know a rebuild kit costs in the $400 range, but what else would it cost to have it rebuilt by a professional? I could not do this myself.

Thanks

Hi.

A worn rod bearing would be heard better and better as the engine speed goes up.
A worn piston skirt could be heard at low engine rpm's and cold engine.
It could be as the other says a combustion knock, maybe it needs an injector job.

About the power steering. I am not sure how the US built power steering is, but if it is similar to the UK steering it could also be a very worn connection between the steering arm and the power steering valve on top of the hydraulic cylinder. Or, there is a conical bolt that can be turned inwards too much, then the power steering stops working too.
So, what I actually try to tell you is that it does not have to be the pump or valve or cylinder itself. It can be a much simpler problem and one that is very easy to fix... if you have luck. :-)

I agree with Mark. If the hours are correct, there shouldn't be a problem with the engine unless someone ran it without oil or some other mistreatment.
Some diesels tend to knock a little at low idle especially when cold at start up. This is a combustion related characteristic and has nothing to do with the main bearings, etc. Warm the engine up and starting at low idle, increase the rpm a 100 rpm at a time and then listen for a knock. If you can't hear a knock or it knocks a little at low idle and goes away in a 100 or so rpm, I'd have a hard time understanding what the dealer is talking about.

You could use the dealer's statement to work down the price, after assuring yourself there is no problem. You can price the overhaul parts using the folks that are on the left of this forum or by talking to a machine shop that rebuilds tractor engines. Just my opinion.

Good Luck!

A seal is not difficult to put in that pump-not uncommon to go out. I would remove the top plug
on the P.S.reservoir and see if it has fluid in
it-fill to plug which leaves container with some
air space. It takes some strokes back and forth
to self bleed the system. I doubt that this is
the knock. With that amount of hours the engine
should not be worn out unless run short of oil.
I would warm engine up well. Sometimes a know
doesn't show up until engine completely warmed up.

I have over 9700 hours on my MF135 and it is running great. Lots of things could cause a knocking sound. As far as the power steering pump not sure what to tell you. I just sold one along with a complete axle assembley. That was my spare I was keeping for mine but it seems these tractors keep going forever so I have a lot of spare parts just sitting in my shop waiting for that day? Mark H.
