MF-35 Lift: Slow to drop

Recently I installed new rings on the hydraulic cylinder piston, honed the cylinder, replaced appropriate O-Rings, adjusted the lift cover adjustments, cleaned the sump, refilled with GL-1 90W, and installed a new pressure relief valve. Everything seems OK now except the lift takes a long time to lower now matter how I operate the controls. Is this normal?

I stand corrected Dean and TXGRN. My apologies
for missing the 1 GL 1. We don't seem to have
that here and I spent too many years with the
woes of Gear Lube in those systems. We always
used the 80 green mineral and flags went up.
It's about 13 below right now and the 90 gear
oil is like tar. Thanks. Chuck

Hear you buddy. This has always been a curiousity to me.

You know Ford and Fergie were partners for awhile. So in the split, Fergie, the engineer, decides to use the heavy stuff in his things while the industrialist Ford, uses 10-20w (thereabouts) hyd fluid. So in your MN winters, the Ford would go up and down whereas the MF just sat there. Never figured that one out.

Course when it's leak down time from worn parts in the lift piston area, Fergie's oil was king. Grin.

Thanks,

Mark

Hey MN Chuck, what are you talking about? You are paraphrasing yourself. The GL-1 90w is pure mineral oil, 90 wt.

That's what we (in TX) use in MF trannies, hyd, and rears today. Can't buy 80w or 80w-90 around here unless you buy synthetic 75w-140 and that's overkill for this job.....and overkill to your wallet.

The reason why it's low to drop is fluid viscosity; i.e. we are in the winter. Now Dean, if it's really bad, then we could talk about something that may have some crud in it, or something that you may have gotten in backwards.

Why don't you run it for awhile before you get too excited and give those new parts time to settle in and the temp to warm up some.

Had an inline injector pump on a tractor I bought. The guy spent tons of money and time trying to get it right. It definitely needed help. I bought it anyway and put time on the thing. Today is starts and runs just fine. All it needed was time for all the new stuff to work in.

HTH,

Mark

Thanks, Mark. I passed on the oil controversy because I was confident that the oil was correct.

The day I last worked on it it ws around 60 F here and the oil had been in the basement before I put it into the tractor.

It's quite slow to drop, almost like the leak down rate with the "hydraulic oil from work" that was in it before I worked on it. Far too slow to mow with.

I still have one more adjustment to make on it and familiarize myself with the controls some more. It it definitely different than the Fords that I am familiar with where the draft control is either on or off.

After finalizing the adjustments I will probably table it until summer when I will use it to mow. Hopefully, it will be less annoying then. If not , I will post back for more advice.

Thanks, again.

Dean

Something I thought about last night after the posting.

Do you have any weight on the lift? Like shredder or plow or something?

Be interesting to know so that you could factor that into your slow to drop problem.

I'm not kidding; when this syrup fluid gets thick in the winter things just don't work very fast.

Thick fluid; bad in winter, but great to not leak and to lift loads when the lift piston seals are worn out in the summer.

Chow,

Mark

Thanks, again, Mark. Yes it had a 5 foot cutter on it. It probably weighes around 500-550 pounds.

First of all drain the GL oil. This does not
belong in there. Use 80 or 90 mineral oil avail.
at your MF dealer or poss elsewhere. If you can't
find mineral oil then use the Permatran or Mll29A
or as used in new ones. Does the 3 pt go down
slow with a load? If just when empty it may be
increased friction with the new cylinder o'haul.
Where is the response lever set(lever by the diff
dipstick)slow or fast?? I've spent a lifetime with
these and I'm serious about the GL(sticky)oil. Chuck

Dean, I am no expert, but I had my pump overhauled and it drops as quickly as I can push the control down. C. T.
