I am in the process of installing a new rack, the old one busted the cover plate, problem is I can not pull the polished rod that holds the rack far enough to remove the pin, does anyone have any idea what might be stopping it from coming far enough to remove pin, all I need is another 1/2 inch. Im hopeing I will not have to remove the complete steering unit just to get to the back cover where the piston is located to see whats jamming it up. Thanks For Any Information

Hi,
Your message is a little misleading. When you refer to the 'rack' I assume you are refering to the two rockershafts which engage in eachother in the steering box. There is a peg on the lhs and a ball on the rhs of the column nut. Remove the peg noting how many shims are fitted and turn the nut to clear the rocker shaft. Make sure that the column nut does not drop off. Remove the bolts securing the column tube and lift the whole assembly out. You will now be able to remove the rocker shafts.

Thanks for the replies, but the problem lies within the top steering cover, which holds the rack and rack guide the rack rides on the upper sector gear, the cover and guide were pushed upwards, the rack rode up on the sector gear, and thats when the damaged started.

Hi,
I'm wondering if you have the same steering box as fitted to UK models. Uk's have two drop arms coming out of the steering box, one each side.
MF 165 and upwards have only one on the left.
Please clarify.
