I'm looking at a 1964 (so I'm told, I didn't get the serial yet) MF 65 with the Perkins deisel. There is supposed to be less than 100 hours on the overhaul. The tires are fair, but weatherchecked. The paint is average, but the sheet metal is below average (quite a few dings & dents). The differential lock pedal seems "fozen" and does't engage. The tractor is located in central Minnesota and is priced at $3500. Does that seem high, low or about right. Is the problem with the differential lock lever going to be a difficult & costly repair. Is the MF 65 with the Perkins deisel a good tractor?
I will be checking it out and test driving it on Saturday 6/17. What should I look for?

It's been darn difficult to find a utility type tractor with 3 pt, live power and lock differential for under $4500. The lock differential in that price range has be impossible to find.

I appreciate any imput you might have.

Thanks,

Mark H.

Good sound design, the Perkins
4 cyl. diesel is a great engine.

If it hasn't been abused or broken
up bad insisde you've got a good
base tractor to work from.

My 165 was bought new in 1965 and is still 'de man' on my place.

My grandfather bought a 65 diesel new in 1960. It worked on his row crop farm untill 1977. After that he used it for hay when he retired. I inherited the tractor when he passed away in 1996.In 1997, I rebuilt the engine and put in a new clutch. The hour meter read 13,746.It had never had any major engine work done before. In my opinion the 65D is the finest tractor ever built for it's size. The dif lock problem on yours may well be from lack of use. If this tractor has been used for work needing little traction, this is likely the answer. The engine should start easily and run smoothly. Generally you should look for the usual indications of problems. I think $3,500.00 is a good average price for a 65D. You can go up or down depending on the overall condition, but $3,500.00 is a good place to start.
