What are the opinions of the people out there on using a Massey 44 as a loader tractor. Taking into consideration the instability of a loader on a narrow front, which tractor (wide front or narrow front) would be the more durable choice for loader work? I believe I have read somewhere that the Massey 44 front end isn't up to the task. Is this true? This is mostly for occasional use, not full time duty.

I have used(abused) my old 44 since I was 12 for everything from a forklift for loading junk cars to pushing every accumulating Iowa snow. If you use it w/more brains than throttle, (teenage experience talking), she'll never let you down. Counterweight is a MUST as it'll pick the rear tires off the ground w/out even getting into the govener. JMHO fred.

As with any style front end and a loader, it is imperitive that you set the rear wheels as wide as possible, 84-90 inches or more. This gives the tractor the required stability. Counterweight is the next consideration. Rear tire fluid, 3 sets of weights per wheel, and a large add on rear mounted weight (steel or 55 gallon barrel(s) filled with cement, etc. None of these will replace a careful and dedicated driver who understands the physics of weight transfer and the margin allocated to human error. A good way not to get in trouble with these older tractors is not to have powersteering. Keeep perfect brakes, and always have your load low. Gravity always wins. Newton was correct!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !QR..... ..
