The cable for the tachometer/hour meter is gone from my 62 MF35 diesel, when i get one, does it screw in the back of the meter itself? Also where does the other end go to?

any way i can tell if the meter actually works before buying a cable?

Mitch:

I repaired/replaced the tractormeter/cable on both my MF-35 Deluxe and FE-35 both with Perkins diesels this past week. The tach cables come in both 23" and 27" lengths so measure yours before you buy one. My 35 Deluxe needed a 27" cable but the FE-35 uses a 23"

The cable connects to the tractormeter (tach) on one end and the back side of the engine on the right side on the other end. It does drive off of the camshaft.

Both tachs and cables are readily available on ebay. Just type in tractormeter. Tachs cost about $40.00 and cables about $21.xx.

The Tractormeter on the gas tractors was driven from the generator. My 65 diesel drives from the back of the camshaft. I don't know if the 35 diesel is the same, but the 152 engine is basically 3/4 of a 203.

Assuming the engine is a Perkins A3.153 which it should be for that year, the tractormeter is driven from the rear end of the camshaft. There is a small adaptor bracket which bolts onto the rear of the block, with an oil seal which is usually leaking. If it's an FE35 it comes from the front of the injection pump drive, but if yours is 62 model it will be a Perkins.

It should screw into the back of the hour meter. There should be a threaded protrusion in the center of it with a hole for the flex shaft in the cable. To test the meter, you"d need to have a flex shaft or a piece of one you could stick into the hole on the meter and spin it with your fingers. The needle on the meter should jump each time it is spun if the meter wors. You could also use a VSR drill. As for the other end, it should hook up to the generator. Some models have been retrofitted with alternators and they do not have a connetion for the cable. Look on the end of the generator for a threaded protrusion similar to the one on the meter. A dealer might have an old cable lying around you can get or you may be able to use a small screwdriver or bit with a square end if you cannot find an old cable. An allen wrench may also work.

Hey, our tractors has an alternator, so it won't work with it?

Probably not. There is a seller on ebay converting alternators to drive the tractormeter/tachometer, but the are about 169 bucks a piece. I would bet that you have the 25-40 dollar GM alternator that most of us do. You can get a tach (low rev) from Napa or a boat parts house that will drive off of the neg side of the coil. Just don't get a 10k tach or our 2400 rpm max engines will barely register.
