I have a 1969 MF 150. The multipower engages fine but in high the tractor downshifts into multipower low by itself if you let the tractor begin to lug down when going up a hill. Is this normal or is there adjustment in the linkage?

Before doing anything expensive, make sure there is nothing obstructing the Multi power control rod that connects the dash lever and the transmission. Sometimes dirt and debris on top of the housing can keep the multi power from engaging properly.

Don, your Multi-power is not shifting, rather the hydraulic clutch pack is slipping, which makes it seem to be downshifting. You will note that it probably has more holding power when it is cold than after it warms up. A number of things can be the problem. Bad clutch disks, worn out hydraulic pump, clogged filter at the pump, bad seal rings a number of places in the transmission, worn spool valve, weak spool valve relief spring etc. I don't want to ruin your day, but this is the reality of your multi-power. Start with the easiest first, and check the filter and change the transmission/hydraulic system oil. If that cures it, you're a lucky guy. The rest of the problems are a little deeper and more expensive to fix. If you need additional info, I have the original factory service manual for the Multi-power transmission that I could copy and send to you. Let me know if you need it.
Good luck!!

Have you cleaned the filter? It is just inside the pto lever over. It is a brass screen that is held in with a wing nut. That and new fluid helped mine (a 135). JIM

Your multi-power is probable going bad. Eventually it will not shift into high.

My 175 will not shift in M-P high. I do not like the free-wheeling "feature" in M-P low. What am I going to have to do to get it back into the M-P high position?

See Mark & Jim's posts above for more ideas, but it sounds like your M/P is out...was about a grand to do ours, with a new main clutch while it was split, at a private (not dealer) mechanic.

Hope this helps
