Hi!
I've found two tractors at the same price and would like to know your opinion.
MF 135:
don't know a lot about it (yet) I'm still trying to get ahold of the seller, it's a diesel.
MF 230:
Good condition, 2300hrs, diesel.
Both have new tires.
Both tractors are priced at $5000.
I'll be baling square bales with it. What is your opinion?
Thanks!

Condition is everything on a 1973ish or 1980ish tractor. Other things to consider: Do they both have Live PTO ? Power steering? Same size tires? Tire condition? I owned a 135 & a 230; they were comparable. I liked the 230 I guess cause it had a better seat!

Hello,
Which one you choose is really down to the type of work you want to do. You mention baling so we'll persue that for the moment.
The 230 is a newer model but providing the 135 is in good condition that should make little difference. The main area of difference is the engine power. Although the same Perkins AD3.152, the 135 is set to give 45 horsepower and the 230 is set for 38 DIN HP. The 230 will probably drive a baler on relatively flat ground OK but may struggle if you have any slopes.

There are few other differences between the 230 and later 135's both having the 10/12 inch clutch as opposed to the 11 and 9 inch on the earlier ones.

I believe that the 230 was principally introduced as a light tractor for yard use, on a scraper for example.

My choice without any dount would be the 135.

I'm not sure when the 230 was introduced, but it was my understanding that it was a 240 de-rated to get it below 40HP. This was to avoid various regulations which applied only to tractors over 40HP. It was for example the only 200 series tractor which could be legaly sold in Europe until 2001 as it did not have to meet drive by noise legislation. All the ones I've seen have a front discharge exhaust to reduce operator ear noise. It was dropped at the end of 2000 as it did not have a Tier I engine option. Perhaps someone can clarify whether this was the original purpose for this model?
