MF-165 charging issue

My father and I struck out today. We're trying to fix the alternator wiring on the family tractor. I'm 3rd generation on this tractor. My grandfather bought the '74 MF 165 new in 1975; even got his picture in the local paper when he did.

Sometime in the last few years the alternator wiring was cut and my father has just been recharging the battery when it gets low. We pulled out the wiring schematic today and redid all of the wiring but still have no luck. The alternator is pumping out voltage. All lines show continuity. It looks like we hooked everything up correctly based on the diagram. We're getting voltage across the ammeter but are not showing any charge. Ammeter does show a discharge upon cranking but then returns to zero.

Does anyone have any advice/ writeups/ pictures that could help me figure out what we've done wrong?

Thank you for the diagram! It does look like we have things wired correctly to everything but the ammeter. My father put an aftermarket replacement on at some point. It has 3 connections rather than 2 and already we had a suspicion that the gremlin lay in where he randomly decided to hook wires. Weather was horrible yesterday and I"m on a deadline today; hopefully we can redo that tomorrow evening. Your diagram looks like it will help me a lot in debugging his wiring.

My dad should never be let near electricity. He once hooked up a new switch to a farmall backwards. For the next couple of decades you turned it off to start it and turned it on to stop. Maybe he beat Bill Gates to the "hit Start Button to shutdown" idea.

I have a drawing that shows how the wires should be connected. If you will send me an Email I will email it to you.
