according to the original owners manual, the resvoir should be filled with 80 wt. gear oil. when this is done the hyd. pump starts to cavitate, so i drained and filled with typical tractor hyd fluid. this stops the cavitation but allows the lift to leak down rather quickly, and it seems a little light bodied for the gears to me. any body want to comment.
thanks

I had a mechanic work on mine and he put regular hydraulic fluid in. It did well initially, but now does not seem to lift as high. Could the type of fluid cause this? I have used it only twice since the repair 3 mos ago. If I need to change it, will I have to somehow flush it or just drain it?

The original fluid should be a green
mineral oil-not a gear oil. Massey
1103 fluid which is hard to get ahold
of these days except at your MF dealer
as part no. 841718M1 which is a 2 1/2
gal container. System is 8 gal but 3
containers usually will fill it up.
This is the best fluid to use as it is
not sticky for your hydraulics sake but
still has consistancy. Chuck

Many posts on this issue. Consensus seems to be that the MF specified lubricant is an 80-90W GL-1 specification...mineral oil. 5 gal pails of 80-90W GL-1 lubricant are available at Napa parts stores. It's reasonably priced. Hydraulic response will be slow at first if it's cold out but will improve considerably after some warm up time.
