MF-35 Deluxe Lift

Not beinig a MF guy I thought I'd ask the experts here before tearing into the lift on my newly acquired MF-35 Deluxe.

Though the lift works well, it will drop very quickly when the clutch is disengaged or the engine is shut off if the bush hog is connected. I suspect a leak somewhere inside, and know how to diagnose such problems on Fords but not Masseys. The previous owner has filled the sump with modern hydraulic oil rather than the recommended 90W but I suspect that more is wrong here.

Can I remove the inspection cover(s) and operate the lift, looking for leaks and/or leaking valves like one does with Fords?

All advice will be appreciated.

Thanks, in advance.

Dean

Dean...the hydraulics on the 35 were not intended to stay up with engine off or clutch pedal pushed all the way down (sounds like you have dual clutch model) MF spec was for 30-45 seconds with nothing on it to be OK. Heavier weights will cause it to drop even faster. You said that PO had changed the oil. Before you dive into the pump/cylinder you might consider replacing oil with some heavier stuff. Although meeting the MF spec a lot of the multi purpose oils (TDH etc.) are lighter than original MF oil. Try a search in this group for transmission hydraulic or gear oil. There has been a lot said on this subject and may make good reading.
Whichever you decide to do I think you will be quite happy with your purchase of a MF machine.

Thanks, Gary. Yes, it is a dual clutch model.

The PO filled the sump with generic hydraulic oil that he had on hand. He could not tell me anything more about it but it is definitely not 90W GL-1.

The lift seems to work fine with the engine running even at low RPM but it will drop within a few seconds after disengaging the clutch or shutting the engine off. With a 500 lb+ bush hog on it it will drop within 10 seconds or so. Seems far to quick to me.

Maybe I'll check the O-rings on the stand pipe and change the oil to 90W before getting into it.

Thanks to everyone.

There"s a small plate in front of the seat to the right, on top of the lift cover. Remove this along with the stack pipe which comes out with it. Replace the o-rings on the stack pipe, and refit, being careful to get it back into the hole in the pump. Refit the cover and test. If it still leaks, drop the oil level and remove the RH side cover. Lift an implement up and shut off tractor. If you see oil running from the ram (under seat) then it"s the piston/rings/cylinder. If not then overhaul the pump fitting a new control valve. It"s not worth not overhauling the pump once you"ve got it out to do the control valve.

Hi Dean, I also have a MF-35 Deluxe. I had same problem, ended up going thru hyd. sys. Some things to look for if you go this far. 1) Replacement cyl, piston and rings available. There is a problem with the cyl. bolt holes. They are not located correctly and the cyl cant be uses as is. You must redrill etc. I would sleeve the old cyl. 2) Replace the strainer. 3)There are ports on top of case used to check pump pressure.4)Check the anchor pins that hold the pump in place. Good luck
