Hello all,

I am happy to say that I bought a MF 165 yesterday. I got the tractor, front end loader, brushcutter, hay tether, drag, and box scrape for what I consider a good deal. Tractor"s hourmeter reads 3000 hours. The seller told me that the engine was rebuilt about 5 years ago. Drove it around for a couple of hours yesterday and the engine ran fine.

I"ve spent the last several days reading from the archives and there"s alot of good information. Here"s what I plan on doing the next couple of weekends:

Change oil/filter
Change air & fuel filters
Change transmission & rear-end fluids
Change plugs
Grease

I figure this a pretty good start, since I don"t know how long it has been since the last good maintenance. I could sure use the advice of anyone if they believe that I"m leaving out something.

I"m missing a few bolts here and there - but a trip to Ace will take care of that. Other little things are:

The wood supporting the seat is rotten,
Fuel gauge doesn"t work,
Missing a side emblem,
Missing PTO cover

I believe this website has most of the above items. If anyone knows of other internet places where I can get parts, filters, fluids, etc..., I would appreciate the information. Look forward to learning from you guys.

It is a diesel, not gas. I meant to delete the plug maintenance line after I wrote the post. Appreciate the tips on checking out some of the bugs that it has. I think that it will suit my purposes just fine (i.e. deer plots, bush-hogging, moving some downed trees, etc.). I can"t wait until Saturday to piddle with this toy!

Congrats on your purchase of a fine machine. It will give many years of service. Your plans for servicing it are good. The only thing that I might recommend would be to get the proper MF Operators, Parts and Service manuals for your machine. Maybe you can find the same manuals for your loader as well.

you mentioned plugs, so I'm assuming it's a Gas. Is it a Continental or Perkins gas engine? Can you post a pic? We've got a Continental 165 that we've had for a good 15 years now, and has it's second loader frame on it now.

It rolled over 4,000 hours on the original engine a couple weeks ago, and it's been starting to slobber a little on the hood from short runs almost all winter long. Its a great running tractor, and we plan to keep it long after the city finally pushes us out of farming in probably 10-20 years.

Hi R and Don
great tractor to have is the 165!
check the tires have the correct pressure to suit the type of work to be done, make sure when you change the oil that the oil filters and the fuel filters are changed or cleaned as in the case of the transmission oil filter.
Don, at home here the firewood merchants have already met each other coming from opposing Cities, The best rainfall areas in our country were settled first on the best soils, now as the urban sprawl takes over the most fertile land, the farms are being pushed back futher into marginal land, (this is allowing for instance the increasingly competitive Chinese vegetable grower to export into Australia), So much for the level playing field and free trade, the professional Farmer here has a lot to contend with!
Cheers Arthur from Tassy.

yeah, our farm is located right on the city border, and 2 sides of us have already been anexed to the city and are under development right now. Sad thing is, 1/2 the new homes that were built more are vacant, and some have been there for 2 years already w/out anybody to occupy them. Some say it"s progress, I say it"s interference.

Good job on getting the 165 reasonable. The "to do" list looks pretty comprehensive. Don't think you have missed anything. Ebay is a good source of gas tank sending units, medallions, and seats. Check the back of your fuel gauge. It should be sending approx 12v intermittently to the sending unit. Check the post on top of your tank for resistance to ground. Move the float around and be sure the resistence changes.
