i have a '60 mod. mf85 and can't find a reasonable priced head, so, i'm looking for a newer model motor. pref. diesel. i've been told a perkins from a 90 or super 90 will "drop in" with no modifications. true?

What is wrong with the old head? Short of being broke in two, most anything can be repaired in a modern machine/head shop. Mine has been pinned, welded and brazed in places over the years, but holds water. Just have to make sure it never overheats. Keep the radiator clean. I might be interested in your old block if you do the engine exchange.

The 85 and Super 90 are the same basic tractor. Early 85s had a Continental 223 cubic inch gas engines. Later 85 and all Super 90 gassers had a Continental 242 c.i. The 85 diesel was a Continental HD-277. All Super 90 diesels were Perkins 302 c.i. I don't know if a Perkins 318 will fit or not.

Buying an engine usually cost you the price of a
complete tractor. 85's had numerous changes before
the super 90 arrived. What pieces are in your 46
year old tractor, would be a case study. Finding
a super 90 for sale, which has a diesel, should be an easier method to owning a running diesel.
Old iron is common to have the wrong components bolted up, simply because they were 'out back'.
