Boss has one of the guys working on his ol Massey 165 Diesel. Something is draining the battry. The man working on it says it'll just be sitting there and he can here the voltage regulator click and the fuel gauge will jump up to 1/4 (tanks about 1/4 full). He replaced the regulator and still has the problem.

Any ideas on where to look for the problem?

Thanks,
Mitch

Do you have a 3-wire alternator? If so, one of the small wires is an exciter circuit to "jump-start" the alternator. If the alternator's internal "cut-out" doesn't work right, the battery will discharge thru that little wire.

BTW, if you have a 3-wire alternator the regulator should be internal on the alternator.

MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OPERATION OF THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. I BELIEVE IT COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT. IF IT STAYS CONNECTED WITH ENGINE STOP IT WILL FEED VOLTAGE BACK.
