Just got my latest project going here, 1952 Massey 44. It has a power steering unit on it, and I was wondering if this is factory? Or was it installed aftermarket. The tractor has a sticker that says power steering right by the 44 sticker near the grill.

hi everyone. i have a massey 44 that i am putting back together. it has a charlynn sttering unit on the steering shaft by the knuckle. i was wondering how to plumb it into the hydraulic system. do i need a flow divider or a proportioning valve of some sort. i just got the tractor and really want to hook it up to steer easier. thanks for any info.

Thats what it is then, a Charlynn, it is mounted up exactly like you described. Must have been a sticker with the kit when it was installed. The front end on this tractor is made by Schwartz Mfg. It still uses a MH steering gear box, but the box is for a narrow front end.

Where abouts is the powersteering unit? I have a MH44S that I added a Charlynn PS. I installed the unit just below the u-joint on the RH side of the motor. Now I can steer the girl. Before I owned the tractor, someone widened the rims to receive 7.50x16 tires, which made the tractor almost unsteerable. The camber and angle appear to be incorrect; but the welding process leaves no adjustment! I replaced the 277 motor (it died) with a 260 (free!!). The tractor was restored in 1991. It has the live PTO option, that was completely rebuilt by an oldtime MH lad. Unfortunately, there wer some transmisson and timing issues that since appeared. The tractor is not used and is on the to-do list. When I get into it I will be sure to give you fellas here on the MH board a whistle, as the majority of my knowledge is IH. QR

In rexamining your photo, I remarked that your tractor has a different wide front axle and mounting plate than mine does. I do not have a scanner or a digital camera, but I believe that mine is stock. Just wondering. Also possible that the power steering is after market and that there was a power steering decal included. When I got my decal set from Massey there was no power steering sticker wiyh the set.QR

The only version of 44's which were offered with
the option of factory Power Steering, was the 444.
Your photo shows a square support, for the steering box, front axle tube, this is not of MH
design. The original cast housing must have been broken. If the PS unit is included in the steering box, running off the central hydraulics,
the PS unit is from a 444. Could be the CharLynn
style, with a valve unit added to the steer shaft,
usually beneath the fuel tank, sharing a brace
bolt, with the battery tray. Most ran off a small
secondary pump, driven by an added belt to the GEN.
Later models had a flow divider, between the hyd
pump, and steer shaft valve, which eliminated the
need for secondary pump, tiny reservor, pulley, &
belt.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of the 444"s powersteering. On my 44S there is a flow divider supplying the PS. 444 standard treads were extremely rare in Quebec. I know of two, and they were brought new from western Canada for retail in Quebec. I know of no 444 rowcrops. However there were substanial 44 standards here. IH sold many W6s through W-450s here, along with Cockshutt 40s and 50s western style. Back in the 1950s farmers here were not growing rowcrops. Soybeans were rare until about 1980. Just the development of crop varieties dictating machinery needs. QR
