I bought a new 471 in 03 traded a 362 mf in and was sick of the 471 on the second day had a new loader on it a 1070 mf, it was to much like a mf 65 old steering slow hyd. clutch petal wrong place, pushed wrong for me kept it a year, traded up to new mf 4335 with 12 speed side shift tranny excelent hyd. and 1070 loader am now a happy mf owner as when I had the 362 mf I think the 471 is ok for some but not for me I also have a mf 6255 4 wheel drive, mf 540 combine, 124 mf baler, we have 3 real good dealers near me so I like MASSEY

The clutch did seem kind of different, I noticed they all have hydraulic combining valves the salesman said was for doing loader work.
Thanks Mike

I have had a 471 for about a year and like it very well. The only problem that I have had was an update that had to be done on the hydraulics. It seems that something was changed when the 271 became a 471 and some part of the hydraulics would malfunction if the tractor sit for several days. When it was first started after sitting you would not have power steering for about 30 seconds or more then it would be fine. This was the only thing that you would notice. I think that this affected some of the 471 thru 492 models. The only complaint that I have is the turning radius is not very small. I liked it better than some of the competitors due to it being simple and having a old and well proven drivetrain. It still uses all metal hoods and fenders and is a heavy tractor. Another thing if you are considering a 471 or 481,pick the 471 and save the money. Several dealers that dyno all the tractors they sell tell me that there is only usually about 4 or so horsepower difference between the two. They are the same tracor except for larger standand tires on the 481. If you decide on one of these pay the difference and get the independent pto if you do any pto work. The mechanics tell me that the dual stage clutch in the live pto models require adjustments more often and the adjustments are critical in having proper operation of the clutch. They also say that the dual stage clutch is about 50% higher when it coms time to replace it. Hope this helps!

Thanks, thats some great info, I was considering the 481 at $3000 cdn. more than the 471 and the independant PTO is just a $750 option.
