I plan to change the trans/draulic oil in my newly acquired MF-35. What does MF recommmend for use in these tractors?

I know that old Fords of the 9/2/8N vintage have bronze or brass components in the hydraulic pumps, and many modern hydraulic oils are not recommended for use in these tractors. Is this true of the MF-35?

Also, how much does it hold?

Thanks, in advance.

Dean

Should be 90w mineral oil.
Can purchase at NAPA Auto Parts - NAPA GL1 Gear oil.

Sounds like the same situation as with N series Fords. Bright metals in hydraulic pump subject to long term damage if other than GL-1 used.

Thanks to all.

Don't know about anyone else but have always used 80-90wt gear oil in the case. Can be a little stiff when it is howling at -30C but run the pto for a little while to get things moving and warmed up and seems to be fine.
Need to change engine oil real soon before we get any real nasty weather. Will drop the 15-40 oil had in for summer (probably should have been 30wt) for 10wt diesel oil for the rest of the winter.

According to my manual for a 1961, British-built MF35 diesel, the transmission, differential and hydraulic system holds 6.6 Imperial gallons or 8.25 U.S. gallons.

Just for the record, the crankcase holds 5.25 Imp. quarts or 6.3 U.S. quarts. Add one extra pint when the filter element is changed.

For the 35 I use GL5 purchased in 5 gallon pails from Canadian Tire as tranny/hydraulic fluid.

It takes a long time for fluid levels to sort themselves out in the tranny, so don't expect immediate feedback from the dipstick.

Hope this helps.

Hey,

It is supposed to be nothing but 90w mineral oil. Permatran is a little more money, but is probably by far the best out there you can get in my opinion.

Take care,

Will
