disconnecting bush hog from tractor

I am trying to disconnect my Hardee 6o inch bush hog from the MF 35 tractor PTO. The drive shaft does not have a yoke plunger by a ring that needs to be turned to the right to release. However, either the ring isn't turning far enough or, if it is, I am having unusual difficultly sliding the drive shaft off. I have tried hammering the drive shaft in the direction it should go to slide off but no movement. Any suggestions would be welcome.

If hammering it off shows no progress, attempt tapping the ring in the disengage direction and see if it helps. I am usually sweating and cussing a shaft that has yet to be disengaged.

Thanks Aaron: It is no obvious to me the problem is that the drive shaft is stuck on the PTO but that the twist lock mechanism is not working correctly and is not releasing the drive shaft from the PTO. I do not know what to do about this.

Hello,
There are a couple of possibilities not mentioned. Depending on what type of hitch you have on the tractor it is possible if you have a straight 'swinging drawbar' that the machine has been lowered and the shaft has been bent by hitting the drawbar and so will not close. Another possibility is that the two tubes of the shaft have not been greased and have worn themselves enough to 'turn' and lock together. This is quite common as people cover the grease nipples but not other important parts.
If the coupling is free on the tractor shaft you should be able to move it a little.
Have you disconnected the linkage on the tractor and tried very slowly to drive forward. If you drag the machine then it would appear that the shaft tubes are seized. Is the machine end of the shaft removable from the gearbox or whatever it is attached to?
Have a look and please come back if I can help further.
