Guys,

I've got a 1969 MF180 with the perkins diesel. The alternator is not charging the battery. Is there a way I can test the alternator to see if it's not working before purchasing anything? Also, does my tractor have a separate voltage regulator?

I see there is an Alternator Exch for $68.97 and an Alternator for $190.84 over in the parts area. Does anyone know what the difference between the two are? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Eric

Take it off and take to a parts store like Napa, Autozone, O'Reilly's or whatever's local to you. They can test, and if bad can sell you a rebuilt internally regulated Delco for probably under $40. That's what keeps my MF35 battery juiced up.

They are externally regulated Delco Alternators. Any reputable local rebuilder should be able to completely rebuild yours for less than the exchange price, provided the rotor and stator are good. I would also recommend replacing the external mechanical voltage regulator with an electronic (solid state) one.

To test, simply measure battery voltage with the engine running above idle. Should be over 13.5v. If not, look for the "F" terminal on the back of the alternator, and briefly connect it directly to battery positive while observing the voltmeter (this Full Fields the alternator, bypassing the regulator and generating MAX output). Voltage should jump up well over 13.5v. If so, alternator is good, regulator is bad. If not, get the alternator rebuilt. In either case, you will be ahead to install a solid state regulator as mentioned above. Get one from the local NAPA dealer.

Smerkal,

Thanks for the info. I've already tested across the battery and am only reading battery voltage. I'll try the F terminal to battery tomorrow.

Any recommendations for a solid state regulator? Thanks.

Eric

Eric, Don"t know if it"s the "correct" way but I put a voltmeter across the battery when running and look for 13.4 volts or so, less than 13 and it"s not putting out too much. The "exchange" is when you send in your old one and you get a rebuilt one. An auto electrical shop should be able to rebuild one as cheap or cheaper, they"re just a Delco-Remy, I think.
