Hi there,
I was recently given a tractor that i believed was a TO20. I ordered brake shoes and axle seals for it but they were wrong. The shoes were way too small for the drums and the seals are too small for the axle shafts.

I found a serial # on the steering column that i think is "8795P". Is there any specific things i should look for to tell if this is a TO30 or what?

I've seen some pictures but none close enough to tell exactly what i have.

Thanks for the help

The TE20 and TO20 had different diameter brakes -TE"s had 14" Girling whereas TO20"s and 30"s had 11" Bendix. Perhaps yours is a TE20? Might be worth putting a post on the ferguson board, where people more knowledgeable than I could advise.

TE-20, TO-20, TO-30 all used the same brake shoes as per Tractor Supply Catalog Dated 1963 with the Ferg. 35, 40, M-F 50 using the same shoe and I think they are very close in size. Shoes "way to small for drums" makes me question if you do indeed have a Ferguson or if it is not a 9N or 2N ford as they are the only models that would look similar that would have a large brake shoe. How many gears do you have in foward and is starter on gearshift? If starter is on gerashift then you do have a Ferguson but if it is not the I don't think you have a Ferguson.

Did you find this "serial Number" on the little silver plate just above the steering column on the dash? If it is the serial number, it should be preceeded by a TO- or TE-,or maybe even TEA-. Take another look. When you find the right serial number, you can look in the Research & Info section of this forum (to the left) and find the year and the model

Assuming that your "p" is a digit (1-9), it could be a '49 TE-20 or a '52 TO-35. Other ways to determine can be by engine number. It should be either a z120 or a z129. This is found on the left side around the starter. If you can find the tag on the carb, that would cinch exactly what it is.

I do believe its the Z120 engine. It has an oil bath air cleaner mounted up high with a rubber heater hose to connect to the carb. One piece manifold that isnt tubing shaped (its squared shaped). The hood says Ferguson above the grille. The serial tag over the steering wheel has been completely painted over (maybe i can scratch it off). It has 3 speeds and a reverse along with an "S" gear that is a dummy.
It was converted to 12v and now has a push button under the solenoid to start it. It has 11.2/28 rear tires.
The rear drums measure about 12". The brake shoes i got are about 8".

I'll get some more info for you. Maybe it is a Ford with a Massey hood.

Thanks for the help

All the TE-20, TO-20, TO-30 had 4 speeds foward with 1 reverse and that S is for your starter to keep you from getting run over and killed, The 9N-2N ford had a 3 speed foward and about 14" brakes, Ferguson never made a 3 speed foward, 1 reverce with s Starter on gearshift. I Do NOT know if the F35 that had a 6 speed (3 speed with high and low) and reverse had the starter on gearshift or not but that would be a 134 engine with the 20 having a 120 engine and 30 having a 129 engine, all would carry the same tire size, the ford does not have a solnoid and the 20 and 30 should not have either

A tractor with a Ferguson hood and engine, but a Ford 3/1 pattern.... Wasn't there a Ford/ Ferguson at some point? I cannot find it in my book, but I do recall something of it. If you can, try to get more numbers off the tractor and I will try to determine what it is. I am sure someone else has heard of this.

Just out of curiosity, are the brake pedals on the same side?

Ok the tractor DOES have 4 speeds forward and one reverse and the S position (the gearshift does not move/shift into the S). It has 14" brakes and 16spline rear axleshafts.
The serial plate on under the steering wheel is junk although i read ....Co Ltd. and on the bottom of the plate 55837 possibly

On the side of the column reads 8537P
The rear has LEYS stamped into either side.
The engine block says Z120A-600.

Tractor was converted to 12v starting system and now it has a push button starter along with a toggle switch to turn on the ignition. The push button starter is mounted on what looks alot like a solenoid.

It has the clutch pedal on the left, both brakes on the right and then individual brake levers on either side.

Someone painted the entire tractor MF gray and the hood is a shiny MF red with Ferguson script above the grille.

Hope this helps..
I just want to be able to get parts for this thing to get her running again.
Thanks alot for your help

With 14" brakes and a Z120 engine, you have a TE20 (made in UK).

Sounds like you have a 20 but TE or TO do not know but if that gearshift will not move into start; move it the same as you would do to go into a gear; then you have a busted tranny and you need to get that fixed and have that safty working so you don't axidentaly start it in gear and drive out the back door of a bank barn; 8-10' drop; or up a tree or something else stupid like that, get that safty switch fixed and you can still use the 12 volt

Well to start it i just leave it in neutral. I'm sitting on it when i start it so i can just hold the clutch in like you would in a car.

I wonder why i would have a tractor built overseas? Did they sell them here too?
