A few posts back I was trying to start my Massey 65 tractor, Thanks to Aaron Ford and Don-Wi and others I got the timing figured out. However it was an expensive lesson. I thought I had it timed close but it backfired one more time and clunk! Nothing.I tried turning the engine by hand, stuck solid. So pulled the starter off to turn the flywheel and discovered the nose cone broke off the starter!I was able to get the piece outas well as one gear tooth that was stuck in the flywheel. That accounted for all broken parts.I found a starter off an 88 but no luck wouldnt fit. I took my broken starter to machine shop and had it welded for 50.00, thinking I could just get a new starter drive. First they sold me the wrong one for $94.00. Then I took it back and they said they could order me one for $140.00. I noticed the only thing broke was the end gear, so went looking through some old starters and found one with the same size end gear, after some filing and fitting got it all back in good working order. A new starter through Napa was 350.00. Got mine put back in, hit the key and tractor was purring! So Thanks for the tips, I really enjoy this site, been reading it everyday. Merry Christmas Everyone!
